This "ode" is funny and ironic in tone. The subject is a sweater vest. I'd say the theme is the uselessness of some fashion trends. The form is a blank verse poem. Find an ode on your own and list the link or copy and paste the ode into your comment field. Tell us the tone, subject, form, and theme of the ode. What is your ode praising?
This Ode's tone is sad and I kinda feel bad for people that can relate to this Ode. The subject is the people that have forgotten that they have been loved. And also about the people that have loved, and I guess have "failed". I'm not exactly sure what the form is, but it IS an Ode, so that could be a form. Also it never rhymes, so it could also be a blank verse. I think the theme of this Ode is love, or the lack thereof.
ReplyDeleteOde to the Forgotten: http://www.poemhunter.com/poem/ode-to-the-forgotten/
The ode's tone is joyful and greatful. The subject is life, and the theme would be that life is great even though some people reject it as a horrible thing only dragging out the dreadful. The form could be free verse/blank verse but I can't be sure, it is an ode though.

p.s. I actually picked out the ode before I figured out it was written by the same person who wrote Ode to My Socks, how interesting that I found it randomly.

ReplyDeleteThe ode is titled ode of remembrance and it honors or praises the lives of the men who had fought in World War I, this is also the subject. The tone has a sad touch to it but it interestingly has a sub-theme. It is to be proud of the soldiers. The ode states "They fell with their faces to the foe." This can be interpreted that they had fought with honor and courage because they had died facing the enemy, or confronting certain death. So this ode/poem can have two versatile meaning. One being of pride and one of mourning. I believe the form is an ode, but it has a rythm to it, so I remain unsure on its poetic form.
These are all good examples, but keep in mind you can find odes in other forms: like songs (Ode to Joy) or paintings, etc. If you do find another poem, try very hard to distinguish subject from theme. What is the obvious "thing" the ode is about, and what is the bigger, more hidden thing?

ReplyDeleteOde To Cheese
Ode To Cheese,
Which Makes Us Smile,
When Camera's go Clack.
Ode To Cheese,
Which make us taste,
The greatest of flavors, the wackiest of whack.
Ode To Cheese,
Blue, Gorgonzola,
American and Cheddar.
Ode To Cheese,
Beja and Feta,
In all types of weather.
Ode To Cheese,
For those on a diet,
or trying to get fatter.
Ode To Cheese,
with crackers and wine,
with grapes can flatter.
Ode To Cheese,
when you're sad and happy,
Cheese just fits.
Ode To Cheese,
Mountains and Mountains,
or bits and bits.
Ode to the Cheese,
To appreciate,
eat,
and take pictures.

An Ode to Family
ReplyDeleteOne may have luck, wealth, fame or fortune, but no family
Another may envy that man, perhaps even try more to be like him.
I think, though, I would pity such a man, for without family one is hollow, like a seashell;
washed by the ocean and pushed to shore.
Family is an ocean, large and abundant, always there, making up the rest of you;
filling gaps so you become like a rock, bound and grounded to the bottom of the sea.
Heavy with those that are parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins;
the bond is to be treasured; cannot be broken.
Family is everything.
This ode's subject is family and its importance. It's tone is grateful and a little sad at the same time. The form of this ode is free verse. And its theme is family is so very important and it makes you who you are. You can everything in the world but no family and not be happy. Family is always there for you no matter what.
OH Edgar my friend,
ReplyDeletemy morose brother
Thine rhyme doth touch the heart like no other
with your quick and wily pen;
What hurts were you trying to mend
Loneliness was your domain
A broken hearted lover
Forever pining in vain
Isolation, lose and pain
And joys so high
With them you can reach the sky
On this one thought I shall ponder evermore
“What fate befell the lovely Lenore? ”
Edgar, Dear Edgar
A life of turmoil spilled across countless pages
Your sorrows, a gift to the ages
This ode's subject is Edgar Allan Poe. The poem was written 2007 so it is therefore in the form of a eulogy, an expression of praise for someone who has died. The tone is also of praise, Milks tone is admiring of, in awe of, and reverent to Poe's ability to take pain and turn it in to poetry. Finally, the theme is the art of poetry itself. It shows how poetry is suffering and "poets sorrow's are a gift of the ages". We talked in class about how poets are more in touch with their emotions and this ode's theme is showing how it's a gift to be able to put that in writing.

ReplyDeleteThe subject in Ode to a Broken Heart is a girl who fell in love with someone, but then the guy left. The tone is sad with what feels like a regret. But, I think it is meant to give a sense of comforting to those who have been heart broken by helping them understand they are not alone. Although there isn't really anything in the actual words of the poem that imply this, I feel like whenever the subject has a negative feeling, people tend to find a bit of comfort in knowing that they aren't the only one that has had to suffer. It brings a mix of sadness and comfort by its very nature. This poem is in the form of free verse. The theme of this poem has to do with understanding that sometimes people that you love and care about end up disappointing you.
