Bood 22 Post
In Book 22, Athena plays an important role, especially when Odysseus starts to fight the suitors. Athena, disguised as Mentor, does not offer assistance in the fight right away, but eventually does. Why do you think that Athena does this? Then when Odysseus regains power officially, of his estate, after killing all of the suitors, he orders Telemachus to go execute the maid women who work under them outside, right after they finish cleaning the blood out of the palace hall. Why does Odysseus want them dead? Also, where was Melanthius, one of the suitors, while all of this ruckus was going on? What does Odysseus do to Melanthius after the all the commotion? Would you have done what Odysseus had done to Melanthius, and the other suitors, if you were in Odysseus' shoes? Why? Also, what is your favorite color? Why?

I think Athena waits to give assistance to Odysseus because they haven't proven that they are even worthy of assistance yet, since they haven't done much as of fighting. When they prove themselves then she helps. Odysseus wants the unfaithful maids dead because they were not loyal to him when they slept with the suitors. Melanthius was in the doorway of the court while this happened and many of his body parts where cut off. I would not have done what Odysseus did to Melanthius because I wouldn't have the stomach to actually see the disconnected body parts and I don't think I would have been able to kill so many people. My favorite color is blue because it looks like the ocean and the sky so it is everywhere.
ReplyDeleteI believe Athena was waiting to see if Odysseus had a fair chance, because if Odysseus failed, the Gods failed due to their choice of side. Odysseus decides to kill the women because they had affairs with the suitors. This is bad in two ways. If you are having an affair you are not doing your job. Also, if Odysseus had really been dead this could have affected Penelope's relationship with one of the suitors. This is bad because those suitors will not stay loyal and thereby ruin the chance of marrying a man with a good, kind heart. Melanthius was, as said, was in the doorway during all the ruckus. I probably wouldn't have killed him in such a cruel manner because I would be tired from killing the other 50 suitors that were trying to kill me. I also wouldn't have done it because I would think the punishment would be to cruel for me to carry out. My favorite color is dark midnight blue, which is in between International Klein Blue and Han blue. This is because the night makes me curious due to the fact that some things are completely unrecognizable compared to how they look like in day light.
ReplyDeleteAthena did this because i think that she wanted to test Odysseus and see how much he could do without her. He wants them dead because they were also disloyal and did not respect Odysseus house and belongings and they were on the suitors side. Melanthius was in the doorway during all this and Odysseus slaughters him. Yes i most deffinatly would have done what Odysseus did because they were disloyal, had no respect for anything, and were rude to Telemachus and odysseus himself when disguised as a beggar. My favorite color is the rainbow because it has all the colors within one and it is just superb.
ReplyDeleteAthena waits to be involved becuase she wants odyssesus to i guess be able to be the main opponent to the suitors at fisrt and she doesnt want ot overpower him. Also athena waited to see how odysseus would do without her. Odysseus wants the maids dead becuase they had had affairs with the suitors and disregarded penelope and not respected odysseus i nhis abcense. Melanthius was hung on one of the pillars for giving the suitors weapons, he was not dead yet but after all the other killing odysseus cut of many parts of his body and made hi msuffer. I wouldnt do this because even though he made the suitors more successful it wasnt anything any other person, including odysseus wouldnt do for their side in a battle. he was just trying to increase his chances of not dying. i also wouldnt kill al lthe other suitors though because it really wasnt their fault. yes, they did devour his wealth but he should have only killed the ones who were relaly mean. it wasnt their fault they wanted penelope for a wife, he could have jsut let them go with maybe a punch or something and a warning. my favorite color is pink, i dont know why
ReplyDeleteAthena waited to help Odysseus because she wanted to see if Odysseus could do it by himself. She wanted to see if they didn't need her help during the fight, but she eventually joins in and helps. Odysseus wants even the maids dead because they have been unfaithful to his kingdom by sleeping with the suitors, even though the maids knew what they were doing was wrong. Melanthius was in the courtyard, and had his limbs cut off. I probably would have done the same thing because I would have a lot of anger for what they all did. My favorite color is green because it is the color of the trees and grass.
ReplyDeleteJohn David, I agree with your rainbow opinion. Presley, you cannot just say that you like pink and do not know why, because that is like not answering the other questions because you do not know why. That question is as important as the others. I feel like that it is a disservice to the community when people do not answer the whole question... Jeez Louiss Presley...
ReplyDeleteAthena waits to help Odysseus because in the beginning Odysseus doesn't really need help and also because she wants to she what Odysseus is capable of. Odysseus killed all the maids because they were sleeping with the suitors. Melanthius was in the doorway and Odysseus ends up pretty much slaughtering him. I don't know if I would have done the same thing. I don't i would have done the same thing because it wasn't SOME of the suitors fault for wanting Penelope as their wife. They thought Odysseus was dead. But also I might have done it because they didn't respect Odysseus at all and took away his wealth. My favorite color is blue because its the color of the sky and the ocean and I just like blue. Dark-ish blue, not light blue.
ReplyDeleteAthena doesnt help Odysseus at first because she wants to see if he has the courage and stregnth to face this challenge. She wants to know if he can actually stand up against the suitors as a strong man that is able to regain control of his kingdom. Odysseus wants the maids dead because they slept with the suitors. Melanthius is actually hiding and when Odysseus finds him, he kills him too. If i were in Odysseus's place i would've done the same thing because i would have felt that the suitors were trying to take over my house, my kingdom, and i wouldnt allow it to happen. Why are you asking our favorite colors? (Mine is silver because it shines and stands out, and i love metallic colors)
ReplyDeleteI think that Odysseus wants them dead because they were not loyal and they were as bad as the suitors, and he would not make an exception for women. While all of the ruckus was going on, Melanthius was stealing weapons from the room. After all of the commotion, Odysseus ties up Melanthius and tortures him by tying him up in the ceiling. Then, Odysseus kills him. I would have done the same thing if I was in Odysseus' shoes because I would want to let all of my anger out. My favorite color is burnt orange because I like the Texas Longhorns.
ReplyDeleteWhen Athena at first watches the fight disguised as Mentor, I believe that she is testing Odysseus. Odysseus wants the disloyal maids dead as well because they agreed, supported, and slept with the suitors. While all of this was happening, Melanthius managed to pass out weapons and armor to the suitors from Odysseus' store room. When Odysseus figures this out however, he orders him to be bound to a plank and hoisted up a column until he reaches the rafters to be dealt with later. After all of the commotion, Odysseus cuts Melanthius' limbs off, torturing him to death. I hope I will never have to be in Odysseus' shoes, because I would never be able to do anything like that. I can't stand to see anyone get killed, much less kill anyone. I would probably injure the suitors.
ReplyDeleteI'm not even answering the last question.
Athena probably waits a while to join in on the fight because she wants to see if Odysseus can take on the suitors by himself. Zeus has told her to stay out of it, so she would rather Odysseus win by himself instead of disobeying Zeus when it isn't necessary. However, after she realizes that Odysseus needs her help she felt like she owe it to Odysseus to stick with him the whole time. Odysseus wants the maids dead because they were sleeping with the suitors, and the suitors are obviously not Odysseus' friends. Odysseus was such a good, caring leader, yet the maids proved themselves unfaithful by not standing up against the suitors. Telemachus had accidently left the door to the storage room with all the weapons open. During all the commotion, Melanthius went into the room and grabbed armor for the suitors. When Odysseus found out what this man hand done, he slowly and painfully killed him by cutting off his limbs one by one. If I were Odysseus, I don't know if I would be able to do the same thing. I don't like watching other people in pain; however, Odysseus' actions are not without reason. My favorite color is yellow because it is cheerful :)
ReplyDeleteEdited: Athena doesn't help Odysseus at first because she wants to see if he has the courage and stregnth to face this challenge. She wants to know if he can actually stand up against the suitors as a strong man that is able to regain control of his kingdom. Odysseus wants the maids dead because they slept with the suitors. ReplyDeleteI think Athena doesn't assist Odysseus at first because he hasn't proven that he is worthy of her help and to test his abilities. Zeus asked her not to interfere, so she was trying to not get involved for as long as possible. Odysseus wants even the maids dead because they were disrespectful and slept with the suitors.Melanthius was in the doorway of the courtyard when all of this commotion was happening. Many of his limbs were cut off and he was tortured to death. I don't know if I would physically be able to do this a man but I would not let them get away with everything they have done. Most likely not death and probally jail.
